Bucks County is an area with those quintessentially American suburbs in swingstate Pennsylvania. Built in the 1950s for the white middle class. A life behind neatly painted fences and green mowed grass. At a safe distance from the big city. Margriet's quest leads to a series of special and intimate encounters. From the young policewoman who is caught between the ideas within the force and her private life, to the mothers who are actually afraid of a civil war.
Margriet now wanted to return to the country, because it seems to be making a historic turnaround. Against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter protests, police brutality and a pandemic, she finds a country in confusion but nostalgia for the perceived unity of the past.

Ein indisches Ehepaar, das gegen das Kastensystem geheiratet hat und deshalb mit seinen Familien brechen musste. Ein japanisches Ehepaar, das Zwangsverheiratet wurde und sich sehr schwer tat mit dem Lieben. Ein knorriges Nachkriegsehepaar aus dem Ruhrgebiet. Und zwei homosexuelle Maenner aus den USA, die erst heiraten durften, nachdem sie schon fuenf Jahrsehnte beisammen waren und die damit verbundenen rechtlichen Probleme loesten, in dem der eine den anderen adoptierte. Vier Paare aus drei Kontinenten erzaehlen offen und ehrlich, was es heissen kann, 55 Jahre und laenger zusammen zu sein. Was auh immer sie zusammenfuehrtre, ob Liebe oder arrangierte Ehe, sie all haben gemeinsam, dass sie sich ein komplettes Leben dieser Beziehung gewidmet haben. Im Guten, wie im Schlechten. Vielleicht nicht immer gluecklich, ganz sicher nicht ohne Kaempfe, aber trotzdem zusammen. Und was steht am Ende, wenn man sich nach einem ganzenLeben in die Augen blickt?

Imagine: you have just lost your child in a shooting at a school. In the long-term aftermath of the tragedy, you are harassed by strangers on the street. They claim that your child never died, never even existed. And that you and your child are involved in a major conspiracy. It is the bizarre reality for relatives of shooting at schools in the United States. More and more conspiracy theories appear that claim that the victims are fake, the shooting never took place and that the parents themselves are actors hired for the role of victims. Without filter, without brake and without fact-finding, the most bizarre conspiracy theories are thrown online. For example by Alex Jones, the face of Infowars, an online platform with millions of viewers and listeners every week. Jones called on his followers to investigate the 'real circumstances' of the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown in 2012. And they did: armed with photo and film cameras, they confronted parents and others involved in village. Some of the relatives were threatened with death, and some were even forced to move. And when the young survivors of another shooting, at a high school in Parkland, Florida, last year called for stricter gun laws, they too were almost immediately called out for actors. For a long time it seemed that survivors and relatives could not do anything about this. But that is now changing. Victims and relatives bring legal proceedings against their assailants. Social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook are taking measures. Tom Kleijn was a correspondent in the US at the time of the shooting at Sandy Hook and witnessed the aftermath of the drama up close. He travels again to the US and speaks with survivors and relatives of the shootings in Newtown and Parkland.

In M & the Housewives of Bucks County , Margriet van der Linden searches for the voter who can be decisive in the race for the White House: the women in the American suburbs. Who are these women Trump has placed his hopes on for reelection? Margriet van der Linden, once a US correspondent herself, goes to Bucks County with that question.
In the former gold mining town of Paradise, the area looks anything but paradise. A fierce forest fire in 2018 turned almost the entire city to ashes in four hours. When Tom Kleijn arrives, another forest fire rages a little further. How is the community dealing with this recurring calamity? A sober firefighter, who could not even save his own house, shows how disastrous the fire was. With impressive archive material, filmed by the fire brigade, police and residents themselves, you can see how the residents are stuck in long traffic jams to flee Paradise. A resident tells Kleijn how he saved his house and managed to extinguish the fire, while listening to Beethoven on his iPod. Other residents of Paradise were less fortunate: they now stand in long lines in front of the town hall for planning permission.
